I was lucky - this would have been a ride stopping failure if it had got any worse on the road. The cut was about 10-12mm long and had penetrated through completely for about 1mm. However the inner tube was OK. I ordered a new tyre from Wiggle and all was well.
I was a bit annoyed - it had only been on a year and done about 3500 miles with plenty of life left (although there was a noticeable flat band on the centre of the tyre). Other riders may get less life being heavier or more powerful. The front tyre is almost as good as new although there are small nicks here and there.
